Sub: Decline in the sale of Oriental fans
Dear Sir
Through your letter referred to above, you had asked me to conduct a survey in the area covered by me and find out the reasons for the decline the sale of the fans manufactured by us. I have personally contacted 5oo persons who have purchased fans of some other brand than the one manufactured by our company and tried to find out why they preferred the brand the have purchased to the one manufactured by us. Besides, I have sought the views of 100 dealers who sell our brand of fans and ascertained their views regarding why people are moving away from the brand of fans manufactured by us. After a careful consideration of the reasons given by them, I have arrived at the conclusion that the following reasons are responsible for the decline in the sales of the fans manufactured by our company:-
1. Two new brands of fans have been introduced in the market during the previous year. Both the brands are becoming popular because of their quality. These fans compare favourably with our fans so far as quality is concerned. Besides they have introduced some new features in them which are not available in our fans. Quite a good number of customers have been weaned away from other brands as a result of the introduction of these fans.
2. Some brands already in the market are offering a longer guarantee than we do. Many people are attracted to buy those fans due to the long guarantee period as people feel secure against anything going wrong with the fans during the guarantee period.
3. Some brands are priced lower than the fans marketed by us. People who have limited resources are attracted by their low price in spite of the fact that they do not match our fans in quality.
4. A major reason for the growing popularity of some other brands is the better after sales service given by them. In case of a complaint, their people reach the customer within a few hours of receiving the complaint. Besides, they do not charge anything for the service so given. This prompt redressing of grievances is highly appreciated by the people. On the other hand, complaints received by us remain pending for weeks. This is turning people away from the fans of our company.
5. Another reason for the fall in the sales of our fans is the better quality of some brands than that of our fans. Brands like Usha and Havel have highly improved the quality of their fans by using superior quality parts and by introducing some new features which make them easier to use, increase durability and reduce the running costs by reducing the consumption of power.
Due to the cumulative effect of all these reasons, our brand is losing its popularity which is reflected in the falling sales. We have already lost a lot of ground in spite of the best efforts of our sales force. In order to retrieve the lost ground, we will have to improve the quality of our fans to match the quality of the best in the market, increase the guarantee period to bring it at par with that of the other brands and improve our after sales services by employing more engineers and technicians. We may even have to have a look at the prices and bring the prices of our brand down marginally in order to compete with the cheaper brands.
I hope that this report will prove quite useful in fixing the problem.
Yours faithfully
