Syllabus Communicative English, RIMT University, 2019 batch onwards


RIMT UNIVERSITY
SUBJECT : COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH
(Common Syllabus for all B.Tech Courses)
Semester : First                                                                                                                       (L : 3 , P : 2 )

Course Objectives:
  • To equip the students with English language skills needed in academic and professional world and to inculcate human/ethical values in them.
  • To make the students aware about the basics of English language and make them proficient in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking skills.

Course Outcomes:
On completion of this course, the students will be able to :
  • Understand the basic concept of phonetics.
  • Attain good reading skills.
  • Review communication as a process with greater awareness.
  • Use appropriate communication skills in specific contexts and for specific purposes.
  • Write well organized self-introduction, Resume, CV etc.

DETAILED  CONTENTS

SECTION-A
1.    Communication: Meaning, Types of Communication, Process of Communication, Channels of Communication, Barriers to Communication
2.    Phonetics: Introduction to Phonetic Symbols for Consonants & Vowels with examples.
SECTION-B
1.    Business Office Practices: Group Discussion; Conducting a Meeting; Agenda and Minutes of meeting; Oral Presentation.
2.    Business Correspondence:
·         Elements of Business Writing, Business Letters: Components of a Business Letter; Letter Formats and Punctuation style Used in Them: Complete Block Style, Block Style, Semi Block Style, Indented Style; Kinds of Business Letters – Inquiry, Order, Complaint, Complaint Redress, Credit Request, Acceptance and Denial of Credit Request, Quotations, Auction Notice, Tender Notice
·         Report Writing – Elements of a report; front matter , main body, back matter, four  parts of the main body
·         Memorandum writing
·         Job Application Letter and Resume Writing

SECTION-C
1.    Vocabulary  : One Word Substitution , Antonyms & synonyms , Idioms & Phrases, Pairs of words
2.    Grammar : Types of Sentences, Sentence Elements, Seven Basic Sentence Patterns of English, Formation and Use of Tenses, Identification & Use of Active and Passive and Change of Voice, Change of Narration, Translation (Tense Based).


SUBJECT: COMMUNICATION SKILLS (LAB)
Course Objective:
The course aims at developing the desired English Language skills of Engineering and Technology so that they become proficient in communication to excel in their professional lives.

Course Outcome:
The student will acquire basic proficiency in English with special emphasis on listening and speaking skills both at social and professional platforms.

List of Practical Activities / Semester-I
1.    Introduction to IPA Symbols, Word Accent, Sentence Stress, Contrastive Stress, Intonation
2.    Group discussion
3.    Mock Interview
4.    Paper reading using Voice Modulation (Reading a paragraph from a newspaper, article, etc.)
5.    Employable Skills
6.    Situational Conversation
7.    Describing people, objects and situations
8.    Just a minute sessions
9.    Taking telephonic messages and passing them on to the intended receiver
Note : For lab. work, each section should be divided into two groups (with the maximum strength not exceeding 30 students) and each group should have 1 lab class of 2 lectures per week.
