Vocabulary Building Unit 6
1.      Portable – In the sixties, people used to carry portable transistor sets with them while travelling.
2.      Documents – Do not attach any original documents with your application.
3.      Evacuation – The evacuation of people from the flood hit areas has been completed.
4.      Elevated – People from the flood hit areas have been evacuated to an elevated piece of land.
5.      Stagnation – The world economy is passing through a phase of stagnation.
6.      Electrocution -  A worker died of electrocution while repairing the faulty electric line.
7.      Disinfect – You must disinfect these utensils before using them.
8.      Collide – The bus collided with a car and overturned it.
9.      Rupture – Ruptures have appeared in the relations between the two brothers.
10.  Prudent – He found it prudent to keep silent rather than interfere in the quarrel.
11.  Stet off – Global warming can set off many changes in weather patterns of the world.
12.  Serene – We looked silently at the serene waters of the lake.
13.  Onset – The onset of the monsoons has been delayed this year.
14.  Seismic – It is very difficult to make seismic predictions.
15.  Recount – The witness recounted the whole incident as clearly as possible.
16.  Calamity – The government is doing everything in its power to help the people hit by the natural calamity.

22.  Colloquial – He used many colloquial expressions during his conversation with me.

29.  Comprehensive – Comprehensive information about the causes of earthquakes is not yet available.
30.  Inherently – No man is inherently bad. Circumstances make him good or bad.
31.  Carry out - Juniors have to carry out the orders of their seniors whether they like them or not.
32.  Strategy – We have yet to evolve a strategy to achieve our aims.

34.  Propitiate – Animals used to be sacrificed to propitiate gods in every culture.

36.  Fertile – The land in Punjab is very fertile. That is why it has become the granary of India.
37.  Accidental – We can prevent many accidental fire by taking proper precautions.

40.  Facilitate – Roads have been constructed in the rural areas to facilitate the movement of goods.
41.  Dissemination – Private institutions are playing a great role in the dissemination of knowledge.
42.  Initiative – Very few people have the initiative to start a new business.
43.  Disaster – Natural disasters cause a huge loss of life and property every year in the world.
44.  Vulnerable – No one can be perfect. Therefore everyone is vulnerable to criticism.
45.  Executive – The executives are paid highly but the workers at the ground level are poorly paid in every organisation.
46.  Integrate – Sardar Patel played a memorable role in integrating the country in the post- independence era.
47.  Marshal – The rebels are marshalling their forces to make a fresh attack on the ruling forces.
48.  Collaborative – Collaborative effort accelerate the pace of progress in the country.
49.  Sustainable – Progress is no doubt our aim but it must be sustainable.
50.  Pursuit – Pursuit of knowledge is much better than the pursuit of wealth.
51.  Residual – Any residual opposition will soon be crushed by our forces.
52.  Precipitate – The provocative statement of a minister has precipitated the crisis.
53.  Forge – The opposition parties are trying to forge unity in order to defeat the ruling party.
54.  Available – The information that is available is not reliable.
55.  Adequate – We do not have adequate resources to finance the development of the country.
56.  Substantial – India has made substantial progress since independence.
57.  Damage – The damage already done cannot be undone.
58.  Heritage – We must protect our national heritage against all attacks of modernism.
59.  Decline – There has been a marginal decline in accidental deaths during the last decade.

61.  Exploit – The rich always exploit the poor.
62.  Dramatically – His standard of living has increased dramatically since he got this job.
63.  Catastrophic – If we do not heed the warning, the results will be catastrophic.

7.      Compatibility – Compatibility of the two partners is the secret of a happy marriage.
8.      Specifications – While placing an order for anything, we must give all the specifications of the article clearly.
9.      Surveillance – This house is under electronic surveillance.
10.  Infrastructure – We must improve the basic infrastructure if we want to encourage industry.
11.  Memorandum – The striking employees want to present a memorandum to the chief executive of the company.
12.  Symbolic – The union has decided to make a symbolic protest by wearing black badges.
13.  Considerable – The country has made considerable progress during the last fifty years.
14.  Discharge –  i. He is discharging his duties very efficiently.
ii.      The patient will be discharged from the hospital tomorrow.
15.  Manifestation – His rebellious attitude is the manifestation of his frustration in life.
16.  Contribution – Bhagat Singh’s contribution to the freedom movement can never be overstated.
17.  Categorise – We can categorise words into eight classes known as the parts of speech.
18.  Assurance – The ISI mark is an assurance of the satisfactory quality of an article.
19.  Ensure – The government must ensure the availability of all essential goods.
20.  Violation – Violation of rules will not be tolerated.
21.  Fraudulent – Many fraudulent practices are prevalent in the private hospitals.
22.  Emissions – Gas emissions from the vehicles must be reduced to ensure cleaner environment.
23.  Efficacy – It has been experimentally proved that faith in the doctor can improve the efficacy of his prescription.
24.  Replicate – Viruses replicate very fast.
25.  Compliance – Compliance with the rules must be ensured at all costs.
26.  Innovative – Only innovative minds can take the country forward on the road to progress.
27.  Mandate – The people have given a clear mandate in favour of the BJP.
28.  Prescribe – Doctors must be very careful while prescribing antibiotics to their patients.
29.   Pattern – His actions always follow the same pattern.
30.  Regulatory – The regulatory authority must ensure the standard of education in the educational institutions of the country.
31.  Density – The density of population in the UK is much higher than in India.
32.  Modification – We can use this machine for harvesting with a slight modification.
33.  Compute – It is very difficult for me to compute my income exactly.
34.  Catalyst – A catalyst is a substance which accelerates a reaction.
35.  Provision – All the provisions of the act are not being implemented honestly.
36.  Appropriate – We will take appropriate action at the appropriate time.
37.  Credence – I do not give much credence to his words because he often exaggerates things.
38.  Exceedingly. – He is doing exceedingly well in his studies.
39.  Devise – We are devising new ways to deal with the problem of cheating in the examinations.
40.  Displace – All the people displaced by the project will be rehabilitated elsewhere.
41.  Respectively – He and his friend have got the first and the second position respectively in the merit list of the university.
42.  Publish – The results of the survey have been published in all the important newspapers.
43.  Career – He has built his brilliant career through his own efforts.

53.  Enigmatic – It was very difficult ti understand the meaning of his enigmatic words.
54.  Dynamics – It is not everyone’s cup of tea to understand the dynamics of an economy.
55.  Missile – These days, advanced nations have found out ways of firing missiles at targets thousands of miles away.
56.  Explosive The explosive outburst of the teacher surprised everyone in the class.
57.  Academic – His academic progress has been very fast.
58.  Patience – Have patience. Your hard work will definitely bear fruit.
59.  Prank – He has been expelled from the college for playing pranks in the class.
60.  Improvise – Punjabi farmers are very good at improvising and using machines made for one purpose for an entirely different one.
61.  Induce – He tried hard to induce the dog into the house but failed.
62.  Embarrass – I felt embarrassed when everyone began to laugh at my answer.
63.  Dazzle – He dazzled the world with his brilliant discoveries.
64.  Audition – I am going for an audition test at the AIR tomorrow.
65.  Conformity – Every society expects conformity to its rules from its members.
66.  Witty – Shaw has been the wittiest of all the English writers.
67.  Legend – He used to rub shoulders with the legends in his field although he never made a name for himself.
68.  Conflict – There is no conflict between the interests of the citizens and those of the nation.
69.  Persuade – I have persuade my friend to join the same college as I have joined.
70.   Resume – He has resumed his studies after a gap of ten years.

71.  Rigorous – We have to submit ourselves to the rigorous discipline of the college.
